Yes I have noticed that rather a lot of time travellers are called Sam!! I think I posted something about that over at Al's place about it being a pivotal name in the spae time continuum. however Sam Tyler doesn't leap around in time he just hangs out in 1974. His boss in 1974 Gene as an absolute gem!! By far the best character, so good in fact that when Life on Mars finished they wrote a spin-off based on him called "Ashes to Ashes" I wonder if they'll stop making spin offs when they run out of David Bowie songs.
